Address by the Mayor Mr Jean Quetier – Airborne monument – 31st May 2018

3152 Airborne soldiers killed in action and 8276 wounded.

Whenever we stand in front of this monument we are powerfully reminded of the magnitude of the sacrifice that was required to recover peace and liberty.
Throughout the countless battles that were fought before finally riding us of the ideology of destruction, these young men gave their lives or were scarred for life to enable us to live free.
Their history must always be remembered, because the freedom which was paid for at such a high cost, remains fragile and precarious.
We must always remember our debt to those young men for the sacrifice that they were prepared to make.
We should always remember that we owe it to them to learn the lesson that their history teaches us.

Thank you
