In 1984, General GAVIN, on his last visit to Sainte-Mere-Eglise, organized a conference for soldiers at the site of La Fière. The association esteemed that a monument should be erected at the site in remembrance of the sacrifices made by the American paratroopers in 1944. It was a lengthy process considering the need to acquire a field and to define the monument project. The choice was made to erect a copy of the bronze statue of Iron Mike at Fort Bragg. The inauguration took place the 6th of June 19?? Since, other plaques and monuments have been added to this memorial park.
